Me and Patricja Pipa Piwosz (@pipapiwosz) were invited by Stiftung Berliner Leben/Stadtraum+ to make a Community Wall Painting at Spandau in cooperation with kids from kindergarten.
My design was based on a subjective mapping of the area of Heerstraße Nord, where the kindergarten is located, and combined cartographic elements with own impressions from the neighborhood. Following a workshop with the children, which concentrated on imagining and mapping the neighborhood differently, I integrated some elements of the children’s drawings in the mural.
The children also participated in the painting of the mural itself, actively co-shaping the spaces they live in. Apart from having the local children as collaborators, me and Pipa made our separate ideas flow into each other – Pipa’s drawings of trees were connected with my mappings by recurring patterns and lines.
